A history, a terroir, a passion
Once upon a time… That of Abbot Foulques of Ardorel Abbey (Tarn), who founded Valmagne Abbey in 1139 on land ceded by the Lord of Cabrières, vassal of Raymond Trencavel, Viscount of Béziers. The Mas du Novi was one of its wine-growing “barns”, located on the surrounding hills and enjoying a breathtaking view of the nearby coastline. This is what we learn from the first writings on the estate, however traces of Roman presence have been found on the site which suggests that the Romans were already making wine on this site.
Since the 11th century, the Mas du Novi, a former dependency of the Abbey of Valmagne, has produced wine on a remarkable terroir, located in the last foothills of the Cévennes.
At an altitude of 150 meters, facing the Mediterranean, the vineyard rests on limestone parent rock, topped with layers of clay not exceeding one meter. On these non-irrigated hillsides, the vines draw on poor and restrictive soil, which favors measured yields and a particularly intense expression of the terroir.
Surrounded by 70 hectares of scrubland, the 30 hectares of vines cultivated organically give birth to wines of freshness, tension and character, marked by a real personality.
Le Mas du Novi is above all a human adventure, carried out by passionate women and men, united around the same vision of wine.
Since the takeover of the estate by Thierry Thomas, each choice has been guided by respect for the living and the desire to best reveal the identity of this unique terroir. Organic farming, precise work in the vineyard, vinification and aging in terracotta amphorae, stoneware jars, barrels, demi-muids and stainless steel vats: nothing is set in stone, everything is designed to let the place express itself accurately.
Under the influence of altitude, the tramontana and sea spray, the wines of Mas du Novi offer a unique balance between freshness, generosity and character.
Sincere wines, like the team that makes them and welcomes you to the estate.
